Firenze Files: An Introduction

I have arrived in Italy!  Actually, I arrived two days ago, but in the frenzy of traveling and unpacking and seeing some of the city I haven’t had a chance to post anything concrete until now.  I’m studying abroad in Florence, which is called “Firenze” in Italy, which is called “Italia” in Italian, which is actually called “italiano.”  I just finished my fourth semester of Italian at UVA, so I’ve been trying to practice “parlando italiano” while I’m out shopping and exploring Firenze.  I hope it’s not distracting, but I’d like to throw in Italian words when I have the chance, and I believe they should be fairly easy to figure out.

So the purpose of this post is to introduce what I’m calling my “Firenze Files,” journal entries, essays, and photos from my time in Florence.  I got the idea to turn my experience into a series of blog posts while I was in the Munich airport and on the plane to Italia.  I was seeing so many new things and so many different people that my head was filled with all these phrases to capture how I viewed the newness of it all, and I decided it would be a shame not to write them down.  At one point on the plane actually, I didn’t have access to my computer or tablet and resorted to scribbling in between the lines of text in a book I had started reading (I was planning on reading it and then leaving it in Firenze anyway).  Transcribing all my scattered thoughts has taken some time, but the first entry I’ve created actually seems like a coherent journal entry or personal essay.  I’m not sure what form the rest of my posts will take or how frequent they’ll be, but I hope you enjoy the coming tales and images from the Slow Foodie Bear abroad!

Here are some of the pictures I’ve already taken:
